A Few Thoughts on Cell Phone Use as a Christian

I have been creating a lesson (or probably a few lessons) for our youth group on cell phone use/technology. I am certainly not against technology, but I think it should be used with caution, especially at a young age. We have a fairly young youth group, so I don’t think many of them have phones yet. But some of them definitely have them, and most others at least have a tablet or other portable device. Below is the handout, complete with scripture references, I plan to give to the teens (grades 6-12). Any comments? I could probably do a lesson on each point, and perhaps I will expand my thoughts in future articles, but this will have to do for now. I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I am worried that the next generation is not learning how to be present with others, not to mention writing well when required, which I didn’t even mention in my handout yet. That may change. Anyway interested to hear your thoughts.

As you start to use cell phones, tablets, and computers more and more, there are things that you as a Christian need to take into account. Technology is a great tool, but it must be used properly and with care. Below I have listed some points based on my own personal experiences backed by scripture. I encourage you to think about these things NOW while you are young before serious consequences arise. Discuss this with your parents and friends, and keep each other accountable.
1. Whatever I do with technology, I will remember that I am always to serve and honor God no matter what I do and no matter what temptations may be present. (Romans 12:1-2)
2. I will obey all parental rules regarding technology use no matter how arbitrary I believe they are, as I understand that God calls me to honor my father and mother. (Exodus 20:12)
3. I will not allow my tablet, phone, or other technology to become an idol, but will see it as the good gift that it is. (Leviticus 19:4)
4. I will not allow my phone to be used as a distraction from being present with others. I will recognize certain times (family time, church, etc.) as times when the phone or tablet will take second place to loving and being with others. I will not check my phone during a church service or activity. It can wait. Even in our technology-obsessed world, I will understand that there is a time for face to face communication. (Galatians 5:13)
5. I know that whatever I do or post online is permanent. Every text can be spread to others. Therefore all of our conduct should be god-honoring and building up of others. (ephesians 5:3-5)
